Robert Carpenter, a player for the New Mexico State men’s basketball team, faces a suspension following his ejection from a recent game against Liberty for punching opponent Shiloh Robinson in the face. The altercation occurred early in the first half during a scramble for a rebound under the net.
Carpenter’s actions, which led to his immediate removal from the game after a flagrant foul 2 was called, have prompted a strong response from New Mexico State’s basketball coach, Jason Hooten. Hooten expressed his apologies to Liberty University and its coach, Ritchie McKay, emphasizing that such behavior, regardless of the circumstances, is unacceptable and does not represent the values of New Mexico State University.
In his first season with the Aggies after transferring from Mississippi Valley State, Carpenter has been a key player for the team. However, Coach Hooten confirmed that Carpenter would not participate in the upcoming game against Jacksonville State as a disciplinary measure, with the possibility of further sanctions pending a review by Conference USA.
Hooten, reflecting on his long-standing career and the reputation he has built, assured that Carpenter’s actions do not align with the program’s ethos. He highlighted Carpenter’s positive character and expressed his shock at the incident, noting Carpenter’s remorse and the absence of any justification for such behavior in sports.
Carpenter, who led his previous team in scoring with an average of 16.4 points at Mississippi Valley State, is now under scrutiny for his conduct on the court. His immediate future with the Aggies and any additional disciplinary actions will be determined following Conference USA’s review of the incident.
