Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and other conservatives blasted Democratic counterprogramming during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union, seizing on a protest-style event that featured activists in animal costumes and sharp anti-Trump rhetoric.
The criticism focused on a gathering promoted as “State of the Swamp,” where far left activists appeared on stage in costumes, including a group dressed as frogs. Video from the event circulated widely online and prompted a rapid response from Republicans, who argued it undercut Democrats’ message on one of the biggest political nights of the year.
Sanders weighed in with a post describing the moment as “normal vs. crazy,” and later told Fox News Digital that while Trump laid out his agenda, Democrats countered with what she described as heckling, refusing to stand for moments of recognition, and a “bizarre dress-up show.”
The event included appearances from figures aligned with progressive activism, and at one point another costumed participant, dressed as a giraffe, criticized ICE and used a nickname for Trump that drew attention across social media. Republican accounts, including the RNC, amplified the clips, framing the scene as an example of what they called an increasingly extreme and performative Democratic opposition.
The back-and-forth added to the broader political fallout from the State of the Union, with both parties using the night’s images and reactions to energize their bases and shape post-speech headlines.
