A detention officer in North Carolina has been terminated after authorities discovered a post on their personal social media account declaring “I am Antifa.” The discovery prompted an immediate internal investigation by the sheriff’s office.
According to officials, the post was found to be in direct conflict with the department’s code of conduct, which requires officers and staff to remain politically neutral, avoid affiliations that may compromise integrity, and maintain public trust. After reviewing the incident, supervisors concluded the officer’s actions undermined the credibility of the institution and could create doubt about fairness in handling detainees.
The sheriff’s office released a statement stressing that the decision was not about personal politics but about preserving impartiality in law enforcement. Leaders said public confidence depends on officers conducting themselves in a manner free from political or extremist associations, both inside and outside of the workplace.
The officer, whose name has not been released, will no longer serve within the county jail system. The incident has also sparked discussion among community members about freedom of speech versus professional responsibility for those in law enforcement roles.
