So, John McCain says he regrets picking Sarah Palin for a running mate. She is the only thing that kept him afloat. Certainly, a lot of conservatives would have stayed home had McCain selected a Rhino like himself as a running mate. Had he not selected Palin as a running mate, it would have been better had he voted for Obama and make history for being the first unanimous vote in history.
I guess it was a historic vote anyway… It was the first time that two liberals ran against each other in the general election. I can’t honestly say McCain would have been better than Obama as poor a choice as he was.
McCain told the New York Times that his advisers wanted Palin but that he wanted Democrat Joe Lieberman as his running mate. Now, I like Lieberman but he also has a lot of liberal positions the same as McCain has. I didn’t like the fact that McCain was the nominee to begin with and would not have voted for him if not for having Sarah on his ticket.
The Times reports: “While he continues to defend Ms. Palin’s performance, Mr. McCain uses the documentary and the book to unburden himself about not selecting Mr. Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent, as his running mate.”
At the time, McCain’s advisers felt that picking Lieberman would divide Republicans and alienate the GOP base, especially in light of issues like abortion.
“It was sound advice that I could reason for myself,” McCain wrote in his book. “But my gut told me to ignore it and I wish I had.”
In an upcoming HBO documentary, McCain also reportedly calls not selecting Lieberman “another mistake.”
Picking Sara Palin as his running mate was the only good thing he did in that election.
