Representative George Santos, a Republican from New York, has declared that he will not run for reelection following a scathing report from the House Ethics Committee. Santos, in a defiant response on social media, criticized the Ethics Committee for what he perceived as a biased and politicized attack on him and his legal team. He emphasized the heavy toll the situation has taken on his family and noted that he never intended to make a career in public service but stepped up when he felt it was necessary.
The House Ethics Committee, chaired by Representative Michael Guest of Mississippi, plans to introduce a motion to expel Santos from the House. This move comes after the committee released a detailed report alleging serious ethical violations by Santos, including misusing campaign funds for personal expenses and engaging in fraudulent activities.
The 56-page bipartisan report concluded that Santos had caused his campaign committee to file false or incomplete reports, used campaign funds for personal use, engaged in fraudulent activities related to RedStone Strategies LLC, and violated the Ethics in Government Act concerning his financial disclosure statements. Specific allegations include using $50,000 in campaign donations for personal expenses such as luxury shopping, online subscriptions, and paying off personal debts.
Santos, who won a traditionally Democratic seat in Long Island during the 2022 midterm elections, has faced mounting pressure to resign following revelations about falsehoods in his background, including claims about his Jewish heritage, Wall Street experience, and educational credentials. Despite these controversies and charges from federal prosecutors for multiple fraud schemes, Santos had previously resisted calls from within his party to resign. The latest indictment against him includes accusations of identity theft, unauthorized charges on donor credit cards, and misleading the Federal Election Commission about his campaign’s finances.
In his statement, Santos also expressed frustration over broader national issues, such as the increasing national debt, ongoing government shutdown threats, border security concerns, and allegations against President Biden. He called for an Article V Constitutional Convention, suggesting that it is time for states to take action. Santos vowed to continue fighting for his rights and defending his name, acknowledging his human flaws but refusing to succumb to what he views as unjust criticism.
