New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed the recent riot that erupted in Manhattan’s Union Square, suggesting that “outside agitators” may have played a role in the chaos. The riot was triggered by a planned PlayStation giveaway organized by social media influencer Kai Cenat on Twitch, which attracted thousands of young people from both inside and outside the city.

During an unrelated press conference, Adams mentioned Cenat and acknowledged the substantial number of followers he had across various platforms. He expressed suspicion about the presence of outside influencers who may have attempted to aggravate the situation, bringing disruptive items such as smoke bombs and M-80s.

Adams also raised concerns about the negative impact of social media on young people, sharing his own experience as a father. He emphasized that children should not be solely raised by social media and urged parents to be aware of the different challenges their children face today due to the overwhelming influence of online platforms and influencers.

The Mayor praised the NYPD for their disciplined handling of the volatile situation, preventing any loss of life or significant property damage despite the challenging circumstances. Chief Jeffrey Maddrey provided details on the arrests made during the riot and highlighted the power and danger of social media, which caused the event’s attendance to rapidly escalate.

The riot resulted in the destruction of NYPD vehicles, damage to food carts, and officers being attacked by the crowd. Maddrey emphasized the need for parents to be more involved and take control of their children’s behavior during such events to avoid dangerous and chaotic situations.

Kai Cenat, the influencer behind the planned giveaway, is facing multiple charges, including inciting a riot and unlawful assembly. He was released from police custody with a desk appearance ticket, requiring him to appear in court to answer the charges. The incident has brought attention to the potential consequences of large gatherings organized through social media and the importance of responsible parenting in such situations.
