New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is facing intense criticism after reversing his long-held support for defunding the NYPD following a deadly mass shooting in Midtown. Critics argue the shift is more spin than substance — accusing Mamdani of staging a political reset rather than reflecting genuine change.
Once a vocal advocate for defunding the police and dismantling the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group, Mamdani stated he “is not running to defund the police” and called his earlier remarks “out of step” amid tragedy. He now proposes a revised public safety model that retains current staffing levels, cuts overtime spending, and funnels nearly $1 billion into mental health responders and community-based safety teams.
Nonetheless, opponents, including former Governor Cuomo and current Mayor Adams, have labeled the move opportunistic, pointing to resurfaced tweets and past protests as proof Mamdani’s shift is tactical. Observers from both political parties have described the new messaging as damage control rather than leadership evolution.
