An NYPD detective is under investigation after allegedly sneaking into the Ryder Cup golf tournament while on sick leave, dressed in full tactical gear, and claiming to be part of former President Donald Trump’s security team.
The officer, identified as Detective Melvin Eng, reportedly gained access to restricted areas by presenting himself as federal security staff. His cover unraveled when he accidentally dropped a loaded gun magazine, alerting event security and leading to his removal from the tournament grounds.
Authorities say Eng was not assigned to any official security detail and had no authorization to carry out the role he claimed. His presence at the international sporting event sparked alarm, given the heavy law enforcement and Secret Service presence already in place to protect Trump and other high-profile attendees.
Eng has been suspended and now faces internal disciplinary charges including theft of services and misrepresentation. Investigators are also reviewing how he managed to bypass multiple layers of security checkpoints while in tactical gear.
The NYPD has yet to issue a formal statement, but law enforcement officials privately described the incident as both “bizarre” and “deeply concerning,” raising questions about Eng’s motives and the security protocols that allowed the breach.
The case remains open as officials examine whether federal charges may be warranted.
