A violent burglary attempt in a park in New York City culminated in gunfire late Saturday night after an off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent was ambushed.
When two suspects on a moped approached and opened fire on the 42-year-old agent and a companion in Fort Washington Park, beneath the George Washington Bridge, the agent was seated. In spite of being struck in the face and forearm, the agent was able to return fire, striking one of the assailants.
The 21-year-old suspect, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, was subsequently apprehended and brought into custody after presenting himself at a hospital in the Bronx for treatment. Although the second suspect fled, they are still at large.
According to authorities, Mora had a deportation order and had illegally infiltrated the United States through the southern border in 2023. In spite of his numerous offenses for domestic violence, robbery, and assault, he had been released on numerous occasions as a result of the current sanctuary and bail policies. Also unresolved was an outstanding kidnapping warrant from Massachusetts.
After being transported to Harlem Hospital, the agent is currently in a stable condition. His training and bravery were credited by officials for preventing further damage, complimenting his quick action under fire. The second suspect is currently being sought by authorities, who are conducting an ongoing investigation.
