Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is facing mounting pressure from House Republicans to be stripped of her committee assignments following her critical remarks about Charlie Kirk after his assassination. The push targets her positions on the House Budget Committee and the Education and Workforce Committee.
Republican Rep. Buddy Carter is leading a resolution seeking her removal from both committees. In addition, Rep. Nancy Mace has introduced a separate effort to censure Omar and bar her from committee service, pointing directly to her comments that mocked Kirk’s legacy.
Omar, in past interviews, criticized Kirk’s rhetoric and questioned the way his legacy is being remembered, while also expressing sympathy for his family. Critics argue her remarks crossed a line, while supporters contend her words fall within the bounds of political debate and note that she condemned the act of violence itself.
The proposed measures would significantly reduce Omar’s influence in Congress if passed, stripping her of key platforms that give lawmakers leverage in shaping legislation. For now, she remains on her committees as the resolutions await further action, but the case has become a flashpoint over free expression and accountability in a deeply polarized political climate.
