Authorities in Pennsylvania are investigating a deadly shooting that broke out during homecoming festivities at Lincoln University late Saturday night, leaving one person dead and six others wounded. The incident occurred outside the university’s International Cultural Center shortly before midnight, where hundreds of students and alumni had gathered for post-event celebrations.
According to Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe, preliminary reports suggest multiple shooters may have been involved. Witnesses described chaos as gunfire erupted without warning, sending students running for cover. “It was pure panic,” one attendee recalled, noting that music and laughter turned into screams within seconds.
Emergency crews arrived on scene within minutes, transporting the victims to nearby hospitals. One of the injured individuals remains in critical condition, while the others are being treated for non-life-threatening wounds. The person who died has not yet been publicly identified, pending notification of family.
Investigators recovered several shell casings from the scene and are reviewing campus surveillance footage in an effort to identify those responsible. Police say the shooting appears to have been an isolated confrontation that escalated, rather than a random attack on the event. No arrests have been made as of Sunday afternoon, though authorities are urging anyone with information or cellphone footage to come forward.
Lincoln University, a historically Black college and the nation’s first degree-granting HBCU, released a statement expressing heartbreak over the tragedy, offering counseling services for students, and pledging full cooperation with law enforcement. “This senseless act of violence has shaken our community,” the university said. “We are committed to ensuring justice for those affected.”
Governor Josh Shapiro also addressed the incident, calling it “a devastating reminder of the toll of gun violence” and promising state support for the ongoing investigation.
Classes at Lincoln University have been temporarily suspended, and campus police have increased patrols to reassure students as the investigation continues. The shooting marks one of several violent incidents at U.S. college campuses this year, intensifying nationwide conversations about campus safety and gun control.
