The Department of Homeland Security has launched Operation Midway Blitz, a sweeping federal enforcement initiative in Chicago aimed at undocumented immigrants with criminal records. Overseen by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the operation comes as part of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to confront so-called sanctuary city policies.
The enforcement action—named to honor Katie Abraham, a young woman killed in a DUI crash allegedly caused by an undocumented driver—is intended to target those labeled as serious offenders. DHS released names and backgrounds of 11 individuals they say fit that description.
Chicago’s mayor and governor condemned the operation, highlighting that they had not been informed or consulted beforehand. The move has ignited public protests and heightened anxiety within immigrant communities, particularly in predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods, where many say the raids sparked fear and confusion more than improved safety.
