An undergraduate at the University of Oklahoma has filed a formal discrimination complaint after receiving a failing grade on an essay for a psychology course. The student argues that her religious beliefs influenced the grade, saying her paper — which discussed gender strictly through a biblical lens — was unfairly marked down.
The assignment required students to analyze gender stereotypes using academic research and course materials. According to the department, the student’s submission did not meet those expectations, lacked required citations, and did not engage with the scientific sources outlined in the syllabus.
Following the complaint, the graduate assistant who graded the essay has been placed on administrative leave while the university conducts a full review. Officials have not yet announced whether any additional faculty will be involved in the investigation.
The incident has sparked broader debate on campus about academic standards, religious expression, and how universities should balance personal belief with evidence-based coursework.
