Broadway icon Patti LuPone has sparked major backlash after making explosive remarks about the current leadership of the Kennedy Center, now overseen by President Donald Trump.
In a recent interview, LuPone condemned the sweeping changes made at the institution, reportedly saying the Trump-led Kennedy Center “should get blown up.” Her remarks followed the administration’s overhaul of the center’s leadership, including the removal of long-standing board members and the installation of Trump-aligned figures.
Earlier this year, Trump appointed himself chairman of the board and vowed to steer the Kennedy Center in what he described as a more “appropriate” cultural direction. That included eliminating performances such as drag shows aimed at children, which he publicly criticized.
LuPone’s comments were met with immediate condemnation from Trump supporters and Kennedy Center leadership, who labeled her remarks as extreme and unacceptable. Richard Grenell, the center’s new president, accused her of promoting division while claiming to stand for tolerance.
The fallout has led to a wave of resignations and canceled performances from artists opposed to the center’s political shift. Several performers have withdrawn from upcoming events, citing growing discomfort with the administration’s influence on cultural programming.
Known for her candid political views, LuPone has long been an outspoken critic of Trump. This latest controversy reignites tensions between the arts community and the former president, once again blurring the line between culture and politics.
