Pope Leo XIV Voted in Republican Primaries Before Rising to Power

As Pope Leo XIV begins his tenure as the first American to lead the Catholic Church, new attention has turned to his past political participation in the United States.

Formerly known as Cardinal Robert Prevost, the Illinois-born prelate was an active voter prior to his elevation, participating in Republican primaries in 2012, 2014, and 2016, as well as casting a ballot in the 2024 presidential election. Illinois law allows voters to select a party ballot in each primary without officially registering with a party, making his participation notable but not binding in terms of party affiliation.

While now serving in a global spiritual role, Pope Leo XIV’s prior engagement in American civic life reflects his deep roots in the United States. Throughout his time as a bishop and cardinal, he has expressed concern over immigration policy and emphasized themes of compassion and justice—values that are expected to shape his papacy.

His unique background, blending American political experience with decades of pastoral leadership abroad, positions him as a distinct voice within the Vatican at a time of global transformation.
