A university pre-medical student is dead after being struck by a vehicle while jogging near an airfield in Lawrence, Kansas, in what authorities have confirmed as a hit-and-run tragedy.
The 20-year-old victim, a sophomore at the University of Kansas with plans to pursue a medical career, was running near the Lawrence Regional Airport on Thursday evening when she was hit. Officials estimate the crash happened around 6 p.m., but her body was not located until more than nine hours later, when a passerby called authorities shortly after 3:30 a.m.
Investigators identified and arrested a 36-year-old man believed to have been driving the vehicle involved in the collision. He now faces multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal injury. Police say the suspect did not stop to report the incident and left the area after the impact.
Authorities are continuing to piece together the events leading up to the crash. Detectives have also encouraged potential witnesses who may have seen a light-colored pickup truck in the vicinity around the time of the incident to come forward.
The university community has been shaken by the loss, with classmates describing the student as focused, driven, and deeply committed to her goals in medicine. She was expected to graduate in 2026.
Local officials reaffirmed that the case remains under active investigation and stressed the importance of public cooperation as they work to confirm additional details surrounding the collision.
