On October 30, hundreds of children dressed as Halloween characters were welcomed to the White House South Portico by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Law enforcement, military, foster, and adoptive families, as well as the children of administrative staff, were represented at the event.
The presidential pair welcomed guests with full-size chocolate bars and a festive setting that included music and Halloween decorations. Highlights included Trump giving a high five to a young visitor dressed as the president and, in a move reminiscent of previous years, the president placing a candy bar atop the head of a child in costume.
Costumes included anything from skeletons and superheroes to a McDonald’s-themed drive-thru wagon and kids impersonating a Secret Service agent and the first couple. During a hectic week, the administration found some respite in the event.
