At Michigan Technological University, a recent incident involving Dr. Carl Blair, a history and anthropology professor, has sparked controversy. Blair was recorded expressing harsh criticism towards the campus chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) during a class. His remarks followed the group’s Freedom Week project, which included constructing a mock Berlin Wall to commemorate its fall’s 34th anniversary.
Blair’s comments, captured in an audio released by the Young America’s Foundation, characterized the YAF’s activities as “childish,” “stupid,” “homophobic,” “dumb,” and “racist.” He accused the group of seeking victim status through potential censorship, mocking their stance on free speech rights and describing their actions as “stupid,” “uncollegial,” and “in really bad taste.”
The YAF’s Freedom Week project also faced direct opposition, with a video showing a protester vandalizing and dismantling the mock Berlin Wall. “The New Guard,” a publication of YAF, contacted Blair for a response, to which he reportedly reaffirmed his stance and abruptly ended the call.
Michigan Tech, in response to a request for comment from FOX News Digital, emphasized its commitment to freedom of speech and academic freedom, aligning with the Chicago Principles. The university highlighted its expectation of respect and civility, particularly in classroom environments.
YAF released a statement reaffirming its dedication to free speech across American campuses, despite facing derogatory remarks from a professor and property destruction by a protestor. The group emphasized its goal of fostering civil discussions on diverse topics.
The incident concludes with Blair expressing frustration over the controversy caused by groups like YAF, stating that college should focus on learning and opportunities rather than addressing what he terms as “idiots.”
