In a startling display of defiance, protesters in downtown Los Angeles burned and spat on the American flag while chanting anti-Trump and anti-ICE slogans during demonstrations that erupted in response to recent immigration raids.
Footage captured the crowd encircling a flag that was set aflame and repeatedly disrespected, prompting police to declare the gathering an unlawful assembly. The LAPD, alongside sheriff’s and federal agents, deployed flash-bang devices and tear gas to disperse rioters amid a chaotic scene of escalating violence.
The unrest followed mass arrests of undocumented individuals and ignited broader civic unrest. President Trump responded by ordering the deployment of thousands of National Guard members and 700 Marines to the city. Meanwhile, local authorities criticized the heavy-handed federal reaction.
Violence included the burning of vehicles, fireworks, and targeted attacks on law enforcement. Federal officials have opened investigations into the offending individuals, and a large-scale manhunt is currently underway.
The shocking imagery has intensified national debate over immigration policy, civil disobedience, and flag desecration—acts which, while provocative, remain protected under Supreme Court precedent as symbolic speech.
