In an unexpected turn of events, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City was briefly interrupted by a group of activists demonstrating in support of Palestinian rights. The activists, who wore white suits with various slogans, staged a dramatic protest involving fake blood on the route of the iconic parade, causing a temporary halt to the festivities.
The group descended upon 6th Avenue shortly before 11 a.m., as reported by local media, with signs bearing messages like “Liberation for Palestine and Planet” and chanting for intifada and revolution. The demonstration took a theatrical turn as some protestors lay on the street pretending to be casualties of conflict, while others doused them with artificial blood, drawing boos from onlookers who had gathered to enjoy the parade.
Amid their chants, which included the contentious slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” activists also voiced criticisms against militarism, racism, and ethnic cleansing. When approached by law enforcement, one protestor declared they were physically unable to move due to being glued to the pavement, declaring the need for a ceasefire and the right of Palestinians to reclaim ancestral lands.
Additionally, environmental concerns were voiced alongside political ones, with an activist proclaiming the urgent issues of ongoing genocide and a dying planet. The protest, which included demonstrators expressing pain as police attempted to remove them, caused frustration among parade viewers, with one attendee voicing their irritation at the timing and method of the protest, feeling that it overshadowed the efforts of those participating in the parade.
