Putin’s Absence Fuels Speculation as Zelensky Makes Remark on Russian Leader

Russian President Vladimir Putin has not been seen publicly for more than a week, prompting international attention amid ongoing conflict with Ukraine and global diplomatic engagement. During the Munich Security Conference, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a pointed comment on Putin’s lack of visibility, suggesting the Russian leader’s time in power may be limited and noting the age difference between them.

Putin, 73, has been absent from public view since early February. While state media has continued to broadcast footage purportedly showing him in official meetings, observers have noted that some of this material may be prerecorded, contributing to uncertainty about his current whereabouts and health status.

The extended gap in public appearances has sparked a range of speculation, from routine scheduling to serious health concerns, although there has been no official confirmation of any medical issue or change in leadership responsibilities within the Kremlin. Kremlin spokespeople have not provided detailed updates on why the president has not appeared in recent public engagements.

Zelensky’s comments came in the context of discussions about the Ukraine-Russia war and diplomatic efforts around the conflict. His remark about Putin’s limited time was delivered with a measure of levity at the conference but underscored the ongoing pressures both leaders face amid the protracted fighting and international debate over peace negotiations.

Putin remains the formal head of state, and Russia’s military operations and negotiations continue under his official leadership despite the current lull in his public appearances.
