Rand Paul has officially introduced legislation that he hopes will end gun-free zones, while hard-lefties are calling to go even further with gun control.
The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 banned all weapons on school property, hoping it would help reduce violence… it didn’t. Paul is a huge advocate for our Second Amendment rights and even called for arming teachers after the Sandy Hook shooting.
“If my kids were at that school, I would have preferred that the teacher had concealed-carry and had a gun in her desk,” Paul said then, according to USA Today.
“Is it perfect? No. Would they always get the killer? No. Would an accident sometimes happen in a melee? Maybe. But nobody had any defense, and he just kept shooting until he was tired and he decided to shoot himself,” he said of the Connecticut shooting.
“You have the choice to go to any school you want, so my answer to them is, ‘If you don’t want a teacher or a marshal or you don’t want someone with a gun at your school, you go to a gun-free school zone. That’s where you go,’” Andrew Pollack, the father of one of the Parkland victims, told CNN.
Back when I was in school, you kept your guns in your truck. No mass shootings ever happened. No one, seemingly, ever even thought about it.
Trump has followed this as well, calling for the arming of teachers.
“Today, it was my great honor to host a School Safety Roundtable at the @WhiteHouse with State and local leaders, law enforcement officers, and education officials. There is nothing more important than protecting our children. They deserve to be safe, and we will deliver!”
Trump called for the repeal of legislation that created gun-free zones around primary and secondary schools in the 1990s to allow teachers to carry concealed weapons into classrooms. If up to 40 percent of each school’s faculty was armed, Trump said, shooting sprees could be deterred or at least quickly contained.
