Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has openly declared his opposition to former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley as a 2024 presidential candidate. In a recent video and the launch of a website, Paul made his stance clear, stating, “I am never Nikki.”
Paul, while acknowledging his favorable views of other potential candidates, including former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, emphasized his disapproval of Haley. He cited her foreign policy stances and her involvement with the military-industrial complex as key reasons for his opposition. Additionally, Paul criticized Haley’s views on internet usage, particularly her idea that users should be registered to access the internet.
On his website, NeverNikki.net, which is paid for by his Senate campaign, Paul elaborates on his criticisms of Haley. He particularly focuses on her stance regarding the internet, arguing that it contradicts the principles of a free American Republic. Paul references the founding fathers’ use of pseudonyms in their writings, such as the Federalist Papers, to express their views anonymously for fear of government retribution.
Haley faced criticism in November after suggesting that all social media users should be verified in the name of “national security.” She argued that verification would enhance accountability and reduce foreign interference. However, she later clarified that her concern was primarily about anonymous foreign actors, not American citizens exercising free speech.
Paul’s clear declaration against Haley marks a notable stance in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential race, emphasizing the diverging views within the Republican Party on potential candidates. The move by Paul to openly campaign against a fellow Republican signals the growing intensity and complexity of the upcoming presidential election.
