During his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump introduced Anna Zarutska, the mother of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee who was killed in a stabbing attack on a Charlotte light rail train in August 2025.
As the president described the circumstances surrounding Iryna’s death, her mother became visibly emotional while seated in the chamber.
Iryna had fled the war in Ukraine seeking safety in the United States and was attacked while commuting home on public transportation.
The suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., was later arrested and charged in connection with the killing, a case that drew national attention and prompted renewed discussions about public safety.
Trump used the moment to pledge that justice would be pursued as lawmakers and guests witnessed the emotional tribute.
