First son Hunter Biden’s foray into the art world has proven to be lucrative, with his artwork fetching a substantial sum of at least $1.3 million. Among the buyers is Elizabeth Hirsh Naftali, a Democratic donor and philanthropist from Los Angeles, who was appointed to the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad by President Biden in July 2022. Naftali’s purchase of one of Hunter’s artworks has raised some eyebrows, considering the timing of her appointment and the fact that she is a friend of the Biden family.

While specific details about Naftali’s purchase, including the price and timing, remain undisclosed, it has been confirmed that she was recommended for her preservation board post by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and that the art deal was not a factor in her appointment.

Another major buyer, whose identity remains a mystery, acquired a substantial portion of Hunter’s artworks, purchasing 11 pieces for a total of $875,000. Additionally, it was revealed that Hunter’s “sugar brother,” Kevin Morris, a wealthy lawyer, has also bought some of his artwork, reportedly providing financial assistance to the tune of $2 million to help settle back taxes.

Despite mounting concerns about potential influence-peddling and money laundering through Hunter’s art sales, the Georges Bergès Gallery, which represents Hunter, has refused to cooperate with the House Oversight Committee’s requests to reveal the names of art buyers.

Previously, Hunter’s Hollywood art show raised ethical questions when Eric Garcetti, President Biden’s embattled nominee for US ambassador to India, attended the event. Garcetti’s confirmation by the Senate in March came amid criticism from fellow Democrats regarding his handling of sexual harassment claims while serving as the mayor of Los Angeles.

House Republicans have been investigating Hunter Biden’s past business dealings with international associates, especially in countries like China and Ukraine during his father’s tenure as vice president. The concern now extends to Hunter’s art career, with suspicions of potential corruption and illicit financial transactions.

When Hunter’s art sales were initially announced, the White House pledged to keep the buyers’ identities anonymous to prevent corruption. However, ethics experts have questioned the feasibility of maintaining anonymity in art purchases, as buyers typically intend to display the artwork, making it challenging to keep their identities hidden.

As the scrutiny surrounding Hunter Biden’s art sales continues, the White House and Hunter’s legal team have yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter.
