The president’s son appears to have negotiated his way out of jail time for alleged tax and firearm offenses by entering a plea agreement, which has been promptly condemned by Republican leaders. A felony gun possession allegation will be dismissed in exchange for Hunter Biden’s participation in a pretrial diversion program and his guilty plea to misdemeanor charges of willful failure to pay federal income tax for 2017 and 2018. According to legal papers submitted in Delaware, he may be able to have the gun charge dismissed provided he meets certain conditions.
Conservative leaders were quick to draw parallels between the treatment of former President Donald Trump and that of Hunter Biden at the hands of federal prosecutors. Trump expressed his shock and surprise on Truth Social, writing, “Wow! Our system is BROKEN! The corrupt Biden DOJ just absolved Hunter Biden of hundreds of years of criminal responsibility with a measly “traffic ticket.” A statement from Make America Great Again Inc., an affiliated super PAC, went even farther, alleging that the Justice Department under the Biden administration was giving Hunter Biden a soft deal in order to give the impression that they were treating Trump fairly. They said the Department of Justice was covering up corruption and bribery allegations involving the Bidens.
On Capitol Hill, Republican senators repeated these concerns, emphasizing what they regarded as a double standard in the legal system. Kevin McCarthy, a member of the House of Representatives, claimed that the Department of Justice (DOJ) aggressively pursues imprisonment if you are a political opponent of the president but gives the president’s son a favorable deal. McCarthy thought this was good news for the House Oversight Committee’s inquiry into Hunter Biden. Rep. James Comer blasted the plea deal, calling it a “slap on the wrist,” and he stressed that the accusations against Hunter Biden shouldn’t derail the committee’s efforts to learn the full extent of President Biden’s alleged participation in wrongdoing.
Elise Stefanik, chairwoman of the Republican conference in the House, has harshly criticized the plea agreement, saying that the Justice Department is using it as a political weapon. She stated that it revealed a two-tiered legal system and accused Hunter Biden of tax fraud, corruption, and bribery. Republican congressmen, including Darrell Issa, Troy Nehls, and Marjorie Taylor Greene, all said they were disappointed by the plea agreement and thought it pointed to a cover-up of corruption within the Biden family.
There was also commentary from prominent figures in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries. Accusing the legal system of having a double standard, Nikki Haley demanded more be done to hold the Bidens accountable. Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, was among those who were critical of the plea deal and who said that Hunter Biden’s political ties would prevent him from facing justice quickly. Vivek Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur, brushed off the agreement as a diversionary tactic and instead pointed to purported audio recordings of bribery and misuse of U.S. public cash.
The White House responded by reiterating that President and Mrs. Biden are fully behind their son Hunter as he begins to put the pieces of his life back together. Chris Clark, Hunter Biden’s attorney, issued a statement saying that, to the best of his knowledge, the inquiry against Hunter Biden that lasted five years is now closed. However, the US Attorney’s office in Delaware emphasized that their investigation is ongoing.
Republican critics of the plea deal say it shows the judicial system is broken and want more investigation into the Bidens’ alleged wrongdoing. The political repercussions of Hunter Biden’s case are likely to last for the duration of the probe.
