As the 2024 election year kicks off, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) finds itself in a formidable financial position, overshadowing its Republican counterpart with a significant cash advantage. The latest filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) reveal the DNC’s nearly threefold cash on hand compared to the Republican National Committee (RNC), alongside a near-triple fundraising total in the last month of 2023.
The RNC’s fundraising efforts in 2023, amounting to just $87.2 million, marked its weakest performance since 2013, with the committee starting 2024 with a modest $8 million in reserves. In contrast, the DNC reported raising $120 million throughout 2023, boasting a record $21 million in cash on hand by year’s end. The disparity in December’s fundraising efforts alone was stark, with the DNC raising $14.7 million to the RNC’s $5.3 million.
While the RNC managed to garner more direct contributions over the year, the DNC benefited from a joint fundraising agreement with President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign, further boosting its financial capabilities. Meanwhile, the GOP grapples with internal disarray within its state organizations in key swing states, critical for securing a majority in both the House and Senate and reclaiming the presidency.
Recent turmoil includes the sudden resignation of the Arizona Republican Party’s chairman amid bribery allegations and financial struggles, as well as leadership disputes and legal challenges facing the Michigan GOP. These issues have compounded the RNC’s financial woes, prompting DNC spokesperson Alex Floyd to describe the RNC as a “financial dumpster fire.”
Despite the DNC’s early lead in fundraising and the RNC’s internal and financial challenges, the Republican committee emphasizes its strategic investments in battleground states, including early voting and ballot-harvesting initiatives. With both parties gearing up for a contentious election cycle, the financial dynamics and state-level disarray could play pivotal roles in shaping the political landscape leading up to the 2024 elections.
