Republicans Propose Unborn Baby Tax Credit to Americans

Republicans are taking a bold stance with their own proposal to expand the child tax credit, a move that includes a groundbreaking provision extending the credit to unborn fetuses.

Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, is leading the charge with a series of bills under the name “The Providing For Life Act,” aiming to overhaul the federal family care system in a profound way.

In a statement, Hinson asserted that her legislation is charting a new course for a culture of life in America, emphasizing their commitment to protecting the most vulnerable in society.

Under the GOP’s proposal, the child tax credit would see a substantial boost, with a cap of $3,500 for children aged 5 and under and $4,500 for kids aged 6-17. However, there is a caveat for parents to qualify for the credit – they must be employed.

The most groundbreaking aspect of the bill is the retroactive extension of the tax credit to unborn children. Parents would become eligible to claim the tax credit during the year of the pregnancy once the child is born, in addition to receiving the regular child tax credit for the current year.

While the expanded child tax credit gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, Democrats’ efforts to make it permanent faced challenges. Presently, the credit stands at a maximum of $2,000 per dependent in the most recent tax cycle.

The package of bills doesn’t stop there; it also includes other measures to bolster support for families. Among them is an option for parents to tap into their Social Security for up to three months of paid parental leave. Additionally, it seeks to enhance certain benefits for new mothers and incentivize states to establish guidelines for fathers contributing to pregnancy costs. Cooperation with child support requirements would be necessary to receive SNAP food benefits.

The current political climate around abortion access adds complexity to the debate. However, Hinson’s legislation takes a comprehensive approach, offering economic benefits for young families while providing support programs on college campuses and pregnancy resource centers. The bill also proposes a federal clearinghouse of resources and increased support for social service programs at places of worship.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., introduced a similar bill in the Senate, emphasizing that it offers “real assistance” to American parents and children in need. Rubio’s view is that supporting pregnant mothers and their unborn children is a crucial step in ensuring America’s strength for generations to come, making it evident that conservatives are pro-life across the board.
