Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill have vowed to keep digging until they uncover evidence of wrongdoing by the White House, and now they’ve set their sights on President Joe Biden’s family.
Rep. James Comer (R-KY), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, and other Republicans announced Monday that they had reached a “breakthrough agreement” with the Treasury Department to gain access to “suspicious activity reports” (SARs) that financial institutions can use to investigate possible criminal behavior by the Biden family and their business dealings.
According to Comer, one indicator of the investigation’s seriousness is the fact that the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability was granted access to hundreds of pages of financial information pertaining to the Biden family, their businesses, and the business plans of employees.
He then went on to insinuate that the Bidens’ wealth was due to Joe Biden’s political career and connections. Six more Biden cousins may have gotten money from the companies being investigated, according to the Senate Select Committee on Biden Family Obstruction of Justice.
Some Republicans have already said they’d like to talk to additional Biden relatives. Comer said last month that Biden’s vice presidential financial records revealed a Chinese energy business had given $1 million in indirect payments to Biden’s adult son Hunter Biden, brother James Biden, daughter-in-law Hallie Biden, and an unnamed “Biden.” Some are worried that this may lead to lobbying and backroom deals.
The president’s response to these results was, “That’s not true.” A spokesperson for Hunter Biden has denied responsibility, calling the allegations a “baseless right-wing conspiracy.” The president’s son said in an interview with CNN that he had “received his share of good faith seed funds” as part of a joint venture and had shared the money “with his uncle, James Biden, and Hallie Biden, with whom he was involved at the time, and sharing expenses.”
Hunter Biden’s tax returns, investments, and dealings with Chinese and Ukrainian companies are all under scrutiny by federal investigators. Republicans are worried that President Obama may use executive power to get things done after discovering potentially damaging information on an abandoned laptop, despite Hunter Biden’s assurances that he will be exonerated.
On Monday, neither Senate Democrats nor Senate Independents visited the Treasury. According to a committee employee who spoke with The Daily Wire, Democrats who have been particularly critical of the Biden inquiry did not attend despite having access to the same SARs documents as their Republican colleagues.
After visiting the Treasury Department, South Carolina Republican representative Nancy Mace tweeted, “The number of Biden family members involved (more than was previously known), the amount of money involved (astronomical), the shell companies, and the accusations of prostitution rings… wild…”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, released a statement after reviewing documents that showed the Bidens made extensive use of limited liability companies and wire transactions from numerous nations. The combination of these factors initiated a criminal enterprise of unparalleled size. Someone needs to raise the alarm now. Contact the House Oversight Committee right away.
Oversight Committee chairman and Maryland Democrat Jamie Raskin have been trading barbs for some time.
In a letter, Raskin said that Republicans are searching for “dirt” on the Bidens while “categorically refusing to investigate the outrageous official misconduct by former President Trump and his family.” Raskin said the chairman misled to the public and suppressed material pertaining to the witnesses. Comer says that Raskin is “playing lawyer” for the Bidens by making “baseless accusations” about him and his wife.
On Monday, Comer issued a statement saying that the Oversight Committee would keep looking for more bank records to determine “if the Biden family has been targeted by foreign actors and if there is a threat to national security.” Our current understanding will expand rapidly in the near future. If the American people have lost trust in their government, the Oversight Committee will provide them the facts they need to regain it.
