In the investigation into the fatal assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, law enforcement officials have identified the weapon used as a WWI-era German Mauser Model 98 bolt-action rifle in .30-06 caliber. The firearm is so old that it was manufactured before federal laws required guns to carry serial numbers, making it more difficult to trace using typical forensic databases.
The rifle was discovered discarded in a wooded area near the university shortly after the shooting. It was found wrapped in a towel. DNA evidence consistent with the suspect, Tyler Robinson, was recovered on the weapon and its trigger. Court filings also include messages Robinson allegedly sent expressing concern about the rifle’s recoverability, noting that it likely could not be traced via serial numbers.
Additionally, investigators located spent shells engraved with slogans and symbols, unusual markings that are now part of the evidence. The suspect has been charged with aggravated murder and related offenses. Authorities are pursuing the case and reviewing the rifle in greater detail as part of their ongoing investigation.
