Senator Marco Rubio and a group of Republican co-signers sent a letter to the U.S. State Department calling for a tougher stance on Iran and its involvement in supporting the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel. The letter also seeks more information about the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) investigation into Iran’s nuclear program.
Rubio and his colleagues, including Senators Bill Cassidy, Joni Ernst, and Marsha Blackburn, expressed concern about the lack of progress in resolving key questions regarding Iran’s nuclear program. They criticized the Biden administration for not taking stronger action against Iran during the IAEA Board of Governors meeting.
The senators specifically mentioned Iran’s support for Hamas and Hezbollah in carrying out the recent attacks on Israel and stressed the importance of holding Iran accountable for its failure to comply with its Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations.
In the letter, Rubio also highlighted reports that the United States led efforts to oppose a censure of Iran and expressed concern about the lack of transparency in ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran. He emphasized that the U.S. should not have a “business-as-usual” approach when Iran is violating its commitments.
The letter underscores the ongoing scrutiny and debate over the Iran nuclear deal and the release of Iranian assets, with concerns about the potential misuse of funds for hostile activities. Rubio joins other GOP lawmakers seeking answers from the Biden administration regarding these issues.
