In a recent development in the Senate, Independent Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont has expressed strong reservations about a significant aid package proposed by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The package, valued at $110 billion, has been a topic of debate among Senate members.
In a detailed letter addressed to his fellow Senators on Tuesday evening, Sanders particularly highlighted his concerns about the allocation of funds to Israel amidst its conflict with Hamas. He raised ethical questions regarding the provision of $10.1 billion to the government led by Prime Minister Netanyahu, which he described as right-wing and extremist. Sanders emphasized the high civilian toll in the conflict, noting the thousands of Palestinian casualties, many of whom are women and children.
The aid package, revealed by Senate Democrats earlier on Tuesday, encompasses various global issues. It aims to provide financial support to Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza for humanitarian efforts. Additional allocations are made for the U.S. border. Schumer, a Democrat from New York, is pushing for a vote on this substantial proposal within the week.
However, Sanders, a prominent figure known for his progressive stance, critiqued the bill for its lack of focus on domestic challenges facing Americans. He acknowledged parts of the bill he supports but argued that it does not align with the immediate needs of American citizens, many of whom are struggling financially.
Sanders, one of the most well-known Jewish members of Congress and often vocal about Israeli policies, reiterated Israel’s right to self-defense. However, he criticized the Israeli government’s military actions against civilians, which he believes are unrelated to the Hamas attack. Sanders urged against providing a substantial financial endorsement to Netanyahu’s government, which he believes could perpetuate current military policies.
In an attempt to get a response, Fox News Digital reached out to Senator Schumer’s office but has yet to receive a comment.
