Schumer: Shutdown Talks Leave Democrats Without Gains

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed frustration this week as government-shutdown negotiations concluded without any major victories for Democrats. Despite pressing to safeguard health-care subsidies, climate programs and veteran services, the party reportedly returned from the talks with none of these objectives formally locked into the emerging funding deal.

Schumer attributed the lack of progress to Republican insistence on rolling approvals and deferred policy fights, calling the approach a “stall-and-run” tactic. He emphasized that Democrats contributed more than policy proposals—they compromised—yet walked away “empty-handed,” he said.

With federal agencies still shuttered and thousands of workers furloughed, the dynamics of the budget fight are shifting from immediate relief to political damage control. Schumer warned that the long stalemate weakens Democratic leverage, noting the next few weeks will determine whether the party retains influence on upcoming spending and reform battles.
