Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and a congressional delegation found themselves taking shelter during a Hamas attack on Israel, an experience they shared with the public. In a social media post, Schumer posted an image that featured him and Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) huddled together in a cramped refuge, which served as a stark reminder of the real dangers Israelis face. Schumer voiced his unwavering support for Israel and the critical importance of ensuring it has the means to protect itself against such threats.
Schumer led a group of senators, including Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Bill Cassidy (R-LA), on a mission to Israel, aimed at demonstrating solidarity in the aftermath of deadly terrorist attacks orchestrated by Hamas. Their visit coincided with Israel’s military engagement against Hamas in Gaza.
During their visit, they held constructive meetings with Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog, both of whom expressed their gratitude for the congressional delegation’s support.
Schumer, in one of his posts on a social media platform, emphasized the fruitful discussions they had with Israeli leaders and expressed his unwavering commitment to lead efforts in the U.S. Senate to ensure that Israel receives the support it needs to effectively defend itself against ongoing Hamas attacks.
The senators also took the opportunity to meet with families who had been profoundly affected by the brutal attacks by Hamas. They bore witness to the anguish of families living in uncertainty about the fate of their loved ones or who had family members held hostage. Schumer’s series of social media posts carried a clear message of unity and an unwavering dedication to working diligently to ensure the safe return of those held hostage.
Two other prominent members of Congress, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Representative Dan Goldman (D-NY), also sought refuge in Israel during the recent Hamas attacks but have since left the country.
Reports have revealed that the attacks have led to the loss of more than 1,300 lives and left around 3,200 people injured in Israel. Among the casualties are at least 27 Americans, and concerns remain regarding the fate of dozens who may have been taken hostage by Hamas, with the possibility of U.S. citizens being among them.
Ongoing efforts are underway to assist U.S. citizens in leaving Gaza, and measures are in place to facilitate the evacuation of Americans from Israel. This comes as Israeli forces grapple with the Hamas threat and contend with attacks from Hezbollah along the Lebanon border. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken embarked on a visit to Israel and neighboring countries to engage in discussions regarding the ongoing terrorist attacks and explore avenues to prevent the situation from further escalating.
