Authorities have identified and arrested a second suspect believed to be involved in a stabbing aboard a light-rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina, this week. The man taken into custody is a previously deported noncitizen now facing assault charges.

Police say the incident occurred mid-sleeper ride when an altercation broke out, resulting in a passenger being stabbed. The assailant was subdued by bystanders and detained by officers responding to the scene. The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment; initial reports indicate non-life-threatening injuries.

Immigration officials confirmed the suspect had previously been removed from the United States under deportation proceedings for unrelated charges — a detail now fueling questions about monitoring and border-control policies.

Law enforcement agencies are coordinating with federal immigration authorities to review the suspect’s prior removals and any possible legal violations leading to his presence in the country. Investigators are also probing how he reentered the U.S. and whether systemic oversights contributed to the incident.

Transport officials said the stabbing has shaken confidence in transit safety. Riders expressed concern about security on public trains, and calls for increased patrols and stricter fare-enforcement measures have resurfaced in light of the attack.
