Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee has expressed disapproval of Maine Governor Janet Mills’ opposition to President Donald Trump’s recent executive order concerning transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports. The executive order, titled “No Men in Women’s Sports,” aims to prevent transgender individuals from competing in female sports categories.
Governor Mills has resisted implementing this federal directive, leading to a public dispute with President Trump. In response to potential federal funding cuts threatened by the President, Governor Mills stated, “We’ll see you in court.”
During an interview on “Fox News Live,” Senator Blackburn addressed the situation, emphasizing the importance of upholding Title IX protections for women’s sports. She remarked, “We fully believe that President Trump is right on this. It is the policy of the federal government that we will support Title IX… and we will not support men, biological men in women’s sports.”
The Maine Principals’ Association, responsible for overseeing high school athletics in the state, has announced that it will continue to determine student-athlete eligibility based on their stated gender identity, despite the federal order.
This controversy has also drawn comments from Colorado Governor Jared Polis, chair of the National Governors Association, who highlighted the need for respectful discourse. He noted, “As governors, we have our prior initiative that we continue to work on is to disagree better.”
The debate underscores the ongoing national conversation about the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports and the balance between federal directives and state policies.
