Senator John Kennedy told reporters that, in his view, Democratic leaders are demanding funding for global LGBTQ initiatives and costly electric bus programs as part of their conditions to end the government shutdown.
Kennedy said these proposals are among the “extraneous demands” Democrats are attaching to must-pass legislation on government funding. He argued that such add-ons make simple stopgap funding politically unwieldy and delay reopening of federal operations.
Democrats, for their part, maintain that comprehensive funding bills should reflect priorities on climate, social equity, and international cooperation—not just core operations. The standoff continues, with Republicans insisting that the government must be reopened first, before negotiating policy expansions.
