Senator Cory Booker has concluded a 25-hour speech on the Senate floor, setting a new record for the longest continuous address in the chamber’s modern history. The New Jersey Democrat used the marathon session to deliver an exhaustive critique of both the Trump administration’s policies and Elon Musk’s growing influence in government operations.
Booker began his remarks early Monday and spoke through the night into Tuesday afternoon, using the time to express deep concern over what he called the “corporate capture of federal institutions.” Much of his focus centered on the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), currently led by Musk, which has implemented sweeping cuts and policy overhauls across multiple agencies.
The senator argued that the department’s decisions—ranging from personnel reductions to AI-driven automation—have disproportionately harmed low-income families, veterans, and workers who rely on government services. He accused Musk of prioritizing cost savings over human impact and claimed the department’s actions lacked congressional oversight.
In addition to policy criticism, Booker took aim at what he described as a weakening of democratic accountability under President Trump’s second term. He cited examples of agencies operating with reduced transparency, decisions being delegated to unelected officials, and a shift in power away from public institutions toward corporate technocrats.
The speech, which exceeded the previous Senate floor record by nearly three hours, drew reactions from across the political spectrum. Supporters praised Booker’s stamina and commitment, while critics dismissed the address as a political stunt. Several Democratic senators joined him briefly on the floor in solidarity, although the majority of the speech was delivered solo.
Republicans pushed back against the claims, defending DOGE as an innovative initiative designed to eliminate government waste. They argued that Booker’s concerns were exaggerated and overlooked the administration’s emphasis on efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
Booker’s team confirmed that the senator prepared for the extended speech by consuming minimal food and staying hydrated. Senate rules allowed him to speak uninterrupted as long as he remained standing and did not leave the chamber.
With the speech now concluded, Booker has vowed to continue pressing for increased congressional oversight of DOGE and other executive departments. He also hinted at introducing legislation that would impose stricter limits on the private sector’s influence within federal agencies.
The historic speech has already sparked renewed discussion on the balance of power between elected officials and politically appointed agency leaders, as well as the role of tech giants in shaping public policy.
