Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has broken with his fellow Democrats by voting in favor of a Republican effort to reopen the federal government amid the ongoing shutdown.
He stated that his decision was guided by a belief in prioritising national interest above party lines, saying: “It’s an easy choice to put America first.” Fetterman singled out the suffering of federal workers, military personnel, and recipients of nutrition assistance programs as motivating factors behind his vote.
While Democrats held firm on demanding extended health-care subsidies as part of any funding deal, Fetterman insisted that reopening government operations must come first. He described the current impasse as a “loss for American households” and urged his party to move past internal divisions.
The bill Fetterman supported did not secure the 60 votes required for passage, but his alignment with Republicans signals a fracture within Democratic ranks and highlights increasing pressure on lawmakers to resolve the funding deadlock.
