A powerful winter storm is forecast to impact a wide stretch of the United States, delivering extreme cold, heavy snow, ice, and life-threatening wind chills that could disrupt travel and daily activities for millions of people.

Forecasters say the system will span from the Southern Plains to the Northeast, pushing Arctic air deep into the country and driving temperatures far below seasonal averages. In parts of the Midwest and Northern Plains, wind chills are expected to plunge to dangerously low levels capable of causing frostbite within minutes, while some areas have already recorded near-record cold readings.

Weather authorities have issued winter storm warnings, ice storm alerts, and extreme cold advisories across multiple regions. Southern states, including parts of Texas and the Southeast, face the threat of significant ice accumulation that could make roads impassable and lead to power outages. Meanwhile, portions of the Midwest, Appalachians, and Northeast are bracing for substantial snowfall, with localized totals potentially exceeding a foot.

State and local governments are preparing emergency responses, activating road crews, warming shelters, and utility teams as the storm advances. Air travel disruptions are also expected, with airlines adjusting schedules amid concerns over snow, ice, and poor visibility.

Officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, protect pets and vulnerable individuals, and prepare emergency supplies, warning that the bitter cold is likely to linger even after the storm system passes, extending hazardous conditions for several days.
