Sherrill Holds Garden State Blue, Defeats Ciattarelli in NJ Governor’s Race

Democrat Mikie Sherrill has won the New Jersey governorship, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli and securing a third consecutive term for her party in the state.

Sherrill, a former Congresswoman and Navy helicopter pilot, framed her campaign around trust in governance, expanded infrastructure, and reducing the financial burdens on middle-class families. Ciattarelli centered his campaign on cutting taxes and lower utility costs, but was unable to overcome Sherrill’s edge in suburban and moderate districts.

Her victory comes at a time when New Jersey is viewed as a critical bellwether for national political trends. Voter turnout remained high, and analysts say the win offers Democrats momentum heading into the 2026 midterm elections.

Sherrill will succeed term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy and becomes the state’s 57th governor, while also making history as one of the few female veterans elected to such a role nationwide.
