A shoplifting suspect in Ohio attempted to fire a handgun at a police officer at close range, but the weapon malfunctioned and did not discharge, according to body-worn camera footage released by law enforcement.
The incident unfolded after officers responded to reports of merchandise theft. When officers confronted the suspect, he produced a firearm and pointed it directly at one of the responding officers. The officer, maintaining professional composure, took cover and gave commands while backup positioned to secure the scene.
Bodycam video captures the tense moments when the suspect pulled the trigger and the gun failed to fire. At that point, officers moved in quickly, disarming and detaining the individual without further shots being fired.
Authorities said no one was physically injured during the encounter. The suspect was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and weapons offenses.
Police praised the responding officers for their training and calm under pressure, noting that the malfunction likely prevented a more serious outcome. The department also highlighted the importance of body-worn cameras in providing an accurate record of critical incidents for transparency and accountability.
The investigation remains active as prosecutors prepare charges and review additional evidence, including surveillance footage from the original shoplifting report. Law enforcement officials reiterated the risks officers face daily and encouraged community cooperation in reporting crime.
