On Saturday, February 22, 2025, Hamas released six Israeli hostages as part of a ceasefire agreement with Israel. The individuals freed include:
- Avera Mengistu: An Ethiopian-born Israeli who had been held captive for over a decade after entering Gaza in 2014.
- Hisham al-Sayed: A Bedouin Arab Israeli detained since 2015 after crossing into Gaza.
- Tal Shoham: An Israeli-Austrian citizen abducted during the October 7, 2023, attacks.
- Eliya Cohen, Omer Shem Tov, and Omer Wenkert: Israeli nationals also captured during the October 2023 incidents.
The handover ceremonies were conducted publicly in Gaza, with masked Hamas militants escorting the hostages to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Following their release, the former captives were transported to Israel for medical evaluations and to reunite with their families.
In reciprocation, Israel has agreed to release 602 Palestinian prisoners. This exchange signifies the conclusion of the initial phase of the ceasefire arrangement between the two parties.
Despite the progress marked by this exchange, uncertainties persist regarding the durability of the ceasefire. Both sides have expressed concerns about potential violations, and the path to a lasting peace remains complex and fraught with challenges.
