Six New Plagiarism Claims for Harvard President, Almost Fifty Claims in Total

Harvard University President Claudine Gay is currently facing a series of new plagiarism allegations, with the total number of accusations now nearing fifty. These recent claims have intensified scrutiny over Gay’s academic integrity, following initial allegations that emerged six weeks ago in the wake of her response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack.

The latest set of accusations involves six additional instances of alleged plagiarism in Gay’s academic writings. This development comes after a December 12 statement from Harvard, which concluded that Gay had been investigated and cleared of previous allegations, with only two papers requiring ‘clarification’ and additional citations.

Critics, however, have labeled the inquiry that cleared Gay as hasty and insufficiently thorough, calling it a ‘sham’. The controversy has escalated to the point where Congress has opened an inquiry into the allegations, and there is growing discontent among students over what they perceive as a double standard in academic practices.

Of Gay’s 17 published academic works, eight are now alleged to contain instances of plagiarism. The most recent charge involves a 2001 article accused of plagiarizing nearly half a page from the work of political science professor David Canon of the University of Wisconsin. In this article, Gay is said to have used material almost identical to Canon’s without proper attribution.

Additionally, Gay is accused of lifting text from another academic, Gary King. In one instance, Gay’s 2001 writing closely mirrors King’s work, raising further questions about her academic conduct.

Despite these mounting allegations, some academics Gay is accused of plagiarizing, including Canon, have downplayed the significance of the claims. Canon himself stated that he is not concerned about the passages in question, dismissing them as inconsequential.

The situation has prompted billionaire financier Bill Ackman, a Harvard alumnus and one of Gay’s most vocal critics, to call for a comprehensive investigation into the Harvard Corporation board, which cleared Gay of earlier plagiarism charges. Ackman’s comments reflect a growing concern about the governance and investigative processes at Harvard.

The controversy surrounding President Gay’s academic work has sparked a broader debate about academic standards and integrity at elite institutions, with implications for Harvard’s reputation and the wider academic community.
