In a striking turn of events, Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney Buta Biberaj, known for her far-left stance and heavily funded by billionaire philanthropist George Soros, faced defeat in the recent elections. Her Republican challenger, Bob Anderson, secured victory by a mere 300 votes, marking a historical moment in Loudoun County’s electoral history.
The final vote count, concluded last Tuesday, revealed Anderson’s narrow triumph with 68,068 votes against Biberaj’s 67,768, as reported by Fox 5 DC. An election official from Loudoun County confirmed the completion of the vote count, pending certification.
Shannon Sankey, the campaign manager for Biberaj, highlighted the unprecedented closeness of the race. With a difference of just 0.22% in the vote tally, the Biberaj campaign is considering a recount under Virginia’s electoral laws. Sankey emphasized Biberaj’s dedication to upholding democratic principles and ensuring every vote is accounted for.
Anderson, returning to a position he previously held from 1996 to 2003, achieved this win despite being substantially outspent by his opponent. According to Virginia Public Access Project data, Biberaj’s campaign expenditure reached approximately $1.1 million, dwarfing Anderson’s $70,356.
Biberaj’s campaign benefitted from the support of external groups, including the Working Families Party National PAC and the Soros-supported Justice and Public Safety PAC. Since 2019, Soros’ contributions to Biberaj’s campaign, through the Justice and Public Safety PAC, amounted to $926,000, used for advertisements, literature, and polling services. Soros has also channeled more than $2.4 million into this PAC from 2019 to 2022.
The Soros-backed PAC has a history of supporting various prosecutor candidates in Virginia, with notable successes in the recent elections, including Parisa Dehghani-Tafti in Arlington County and Steve Descano in Fairfax County.
Biberaj’s tenure since 2020 has been mired in controversy. A notable incident involved her removal from a criminal case by a circuit court judge for allegedly misleading the court and the public. In another instance, concerns over impartiality led to her dismissal from an appeal case involving a father protesting at a school board meeting after his daughter’s assault.
Further, Biberaj faced criticism for hiring a convicted sex offender as a paralegal. Requests for comments from George Soros’ spokesperson were not addressed.
