Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor opened up about her relationship with her conservative colleagues in a recent interview. Although she said their decisions and viewpoints often frustrate her—especially as part of the ideological minority—she also emphasized that she makes a conscious effort to find positive qualities in them.
On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, she referenced lessons from her mother: “Look for the best in people.” She admitted there are times she feels like retreating—wanting to scurry out of the room when disagreements grow intense—but said she resists doing so and instead focuses on what she admires in her fellow justices.
She also spoke about the larger role of the Court and how recent decisions have challenged public trust. While warning about the impact of overturning long-standing legal precedents, she underscored that what the Court does today sends signals about what future courts may permit.
