Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was found with a disturbing notebook detailing his intentions for the attack. This notebook reportedly included plans to assassinate an executive at a financial conference, with one chilling entry stating, “What do you do? You take out CEO at annual paras bean-counter. It’s targeted, precise, and minimizes the risk to bystanders.”
Thompson was shot outside a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, just before he was scheduled to address investors. The attack is believed to have been premeditated, as surveillance footage captured a masked individual approaching Thompson from behind and firing multiple shots.
Mangione was arrested five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a customer at a McDonald’s recognized him from wanted posters and alerted authorities. Upon his arrest, police discovered a ghost gun equipped with a suppressor, counterfeit identification documents, and the aforementioned notebook. Additionally, fingerprints collected from the crime scene matched those of Mangione.
In a handwritten note found with him, which has been described as a manifesto, Mangione expressed his grievances against the healthcare system and criticized corporate practices. He stated that he felt compelled to act against what he referred to as “parasites” profiting from healthcare.
Currently facing charges of second-degree murder and firearm offenses, Mangione is contesting extradition to New York. He remains in custody without bail as the legal proceedings unfold. The case has raised significant concerns about mental health issues and the pressures individuals face within the healthcare system, highlighting the broader societal implications of such violent acts.
