In a recent development, the mayor of Porreres, a small town in Mallorca, Spain, has expressed concerns over the logo of Meghan Markle’s new lifestyle brand, “As Ever.” The logo bears a striking resemblance to the town’s historic coat of arms, which features a palm tree flanked by two birds. Mayor Xisca Mora highlighted the similarities, noting that while the birds in the town’s emblem are swallows, Markle’s design incorporates hummingbirds.
Despite the perceived likeness, Mayor Mora acknowledged that pursuing legal action against the Duchess of Sussex would be financially unfeasible for the town, which has a population of approximately 5,000 residents. She stated that initiating a lawsuit for plagiarism is both “complicated and costly,” and the town’s council lacks the resources to engage in such a legal battle.
The town’s coat of arms, dating back to 1370, holds significant cultural importance for Porreres. Residents have expressed discomfort with its imagery being used for commercial purposes, especially without prior consultation. Mayor Mora expressed hope that Markle would consider altering the logo to respect the town’s heritage.
In response to the concerns, a source close to Markle explained that the “As Ever” logo was designed to reflect personal elements significant to the Duchess and her husband, Prince Harry. The palm tree symbolizes their home in California, and the hummingbirds are a favorite of the couple. Comprehensive global searches of registered trademarks were conducted during the design process to ensure originality.
This situation has inadvertently brought international attention to Porreres, a town located about 22 miles from Mallorca’s capital, Palma. While the publicity is unexpected, the community remains focused on preserving its cultural identity and hopes for an amicable resolution to the matter.
