House Speaker Mike Johnson has pushed back against proposals to impeach federal judges who have blocked President Donald Trump’s policies, calling the move politically unrealistic and historically rare. Johnson acknowledged that impeachment is a constitutional option but emphasized the steep requirements and the low probability of Senate conviction.
Instead, he is throwing support behind legislative solutions, pointing to the recent passage of the “No Rogue Rulings Act,” designed to prevent individual district judges from issuing nationwide injunctions. The bill passed narrowly in the House and is now awaiting Senate review.
While some Republicans have introduced resolutions to impeach specific judges, Johnson and other GOP leaders view such efforts as unlikely to succeed and potentially damaging to broader party goals. His remarks signal a preference for structural reform over confrontational tactics as the party seeks to rein in what it sees as judicial overreach.
