A 15-year-old junior varsity player from Kalamazoo Central High School has suffered two spinal fractures after a dangerous incident during a game against Lakeshore High School.
The injury occurred in the third quarter when, following a play, the larger opponent landed fully on the teen while he was lying on the ground. Spectators captured the moment on video.
The injured player, whose name has been withheld, was hospitalized and later released with pain medication. Doctors have ruled him out for the rest of the season.
Both high schools, along with the Michigan High School Athletic Association, are reviewing the incident internally. Disciplinary action has not yet been announced.
